What is “symbiotic emotion”? “Through the evolution of technology to extend memory touch, to connect personal experiences between people and all things with product design, and to extend the senses of designers and end-users to connect memories, where these feelings become an exploration of deep memory, and a continuation of the projection of future perception, not limited to current experience and sustainable design values.” In many cases, I share “symbiotic emotion” with my actual works because this is my design practice, and the subtle influence of “empathy” in design and life can be better experienced.

The Practice and Core of Symbiotic Emotion
The design concept of “Fruit & Vegetable Peels Cups” is to transform the act of eating sweet potatoes into a texture. I think this is a very complete and representative work of “symbiotic emotion,” because this origin point comes from my daily life and from the reminder of how many people use the outer skin as a “dish” when eating sweet potatoes or fruits. I transferred the concept of a container and, holding onto the design of ceramic cups, found the regular characteristics of the texture of the peel through induction to extract the original color, and put the texture of fruits and vegetables on the body of similarly-sized cups. Through the users’ tactile memory and visual impression, even without distinctive fruit or vegetable colors on the Peel cups, empathy can be elicited. This kind of experience may be instantaneous or may come instantaneously in a flash after some time has elapsed. These emotions for the Peel will be a starting point in excavating deep memories or as a means of continuing to create new memories in a cyclical fashion.
Infusing emotion as a
medium for design sustainability
The Peel is based on touch. Through contact with the textures of the cup, not only are users’ thinking and feelings through touch memory called forth, but the cups contain a double-layered, hollow designed ceramic technology so users can hold their cup while drinking hot beverages without worrying about the cup becoming too hot to the touch. This is what I meant when I mentioned the core of my design: “Extend memory touch through the evolution of technology.” In the face of ever-improving technology and changing lifestyles, the configuration can quickly become a thing of the past. Creating designs with more possibilities or influences allows for sustainability to become the core of the design, helping to create sustainable design products and instill every design with sustainable value. During the creation and application of my products, my design philosophy of “Symbiotic Emotion” deeply influences every detail and consideration. By injecting emotional design into my work, my symbiotic emotion serves as a medium for sustainable design.

The Sensory Connecting Memory –– The Influence
of Beauty
From product design, we expanded to spatial design/renovation, curatorial planning, interior design, and other fields. The Peel is a clear and concrete empathic design, and many of our subsequent works have shown and conveyed the importance and influence of emotion in the design process.

effect of a blurred light source, presenting the subtle interaction of light.
The concept of the “INTERLACED”
screen lamp also comes from our design team’s daily life. In a courtyard house garden, the moon outside
the window filters through the pane of a wooden window frame. To replicate that
simultaneously blurry yet clear view, WIRE MESH was used to create the effect
of a blurred light source. As a lamp, it illuminates and can also be used as a
situational decoration; as a screen, it can segment the visuals by creating an
effect by rearrangement based on density while feeling the subtle interaction
of light.
INTERLACED uses the
interweaving of mesh and the tenacity of wood to place the light source behind
the mesh screen, but it’s surprisingly soft and integrated. Each time a
customer selects it as a furnishing, a new experience and aesthetic feeling is
created. At an exhibit, a visitor stood in front of the INTERLACED for a long
time, stating new feelings that the INTERLACED welled up in him. This piece is
also my continuation of emotion in design and practice in sustainable design.
In addition to a connection with memory, it’s also an appreciation of beauty.
Continuous
Expansion of Vision, Demonstrating Design Influence
Expand
emotional design into different fields, retain the value of the original
building; with modern design, infuse functional furniture for a new campus look
The Tong-hsin
Hall and the Future Roof Room at Hsinchu Municipal Beimen Elementary School are
spatial buildings with century-old histories. Before the renovation, I was
already attracted to the characteristics of the original building. When
designing, it was necessary to not only maintain the quality of the original
building but to also create a space that keeps in step with the times in order
to spur on the vitality of children when in use. The bright color schemes
stimulate students’ visual experience and create a rich and interesting
learning atmosphere. Integrating emotions into design considerations where the
old and new coexist; through memories and images of different times and spaces,
the historical value of Hsinchu Beimen Elementary School will be perpetuated.
On a different level and through a different field, this work demonstrates “extending the emotion, the influence of beauty.” When I practice empathy design, I consider the people and the objects and transform them into spaces: physical space and time-space. This isn’t done to reduce the importance of people and objects, but rather, to preserve and present the beauty and emotion of the past, present, and future, and allow for them to ferment within these architectural spaces, showing the influence of the design.

concept of being a “campus museum,” Tong-hsin Hall is now transformed into a
children’s exploratory base.

The Value of
Sustainable Design Continues with Emotion
Designs offer different trends in different eras, such as innovation, customization, and transformation... These are all different aspects of design. In response to the needs of current lifestyles, people’s expectations for design and the influence they bring are constantly changing. And in the design field, we pay more and more attention to the value of “sustainability.” This connotation is found in the selection of the right materials and the right application, without the possibility of waste, loss, and damage. It’s also expected that it’ll be a work that transcends the backgrounds of time and space and life needs, and will be preserved, used, defined, and given value. With the ongoing development of science and technology, extending and injecting emotion into design gives a timeless connection between the work and the user, which may be an existing connection/habit, a feeling of the moment, or a new experience, which will continue to circulate. In future time and space, emotions from these memories will emerge, and the user will have another experience again. Through the core concept of “symbiotic emotion,” this won’t be limited to a single design field. It can be cultivated on different levels, allowing the design to continue to expand and the design value to be sustainable.
